Warning: Minor spoilers ahead
Super Mario has seen many games—from go-kart racing to even being in the Olympics with Sonic. If you can believe it, there was also a Super Mario RPG before Paper Mario, too! Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is a Nintendo gem that many people don’t know about.
I’m here to change that.
Being a Super Nintendo master and having just completed Earthbound and Super Mario World, I wished and wished that there would be a game that would combine the two into one super amazing experience.
It just so happened that I came across Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars at a local video game store and I had to get it.
Combining one of the most iconic video game IP’s with RPG mechanics?! Brilliant! My young mind was racing with excitement. I had no idea what was actually in store for me, though. Would I be jumping on Goombas or shooting fireballs? Would I have amazing party members that are a part of the Super Mario franchise? The answer was…YES!
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars starts with your race to save Princess Toadstool who was captured by Bowser.
Big shocker there.
During your battle with the oversized toad, a huge talking sword with a very evil face falls from the sky and evil creatures take over Bowsers castle! Let the escapades begin!
The addition of dialogue with Toadstool, Bowser and everyone else in the world really adds something special to the Super Mario universe here. You get a unique insight to how Bowser thinks as well as fun interactions with Mario. There are also other characters that are unique to the story also join your party.
Each one of them feels right at home and adds a lot to the game itself.
Battles are so much fun and keep you engaged throughout the entire game. ‘Timed Hits’ are featured here—hitting the attack button at just the right time, depending on the weapon used, will do bonus damage. Because of this, you have to be ready during each attack. Also, special moves, like Mario’s fireballs, require you to press the special attack button as fast as possible for the most damage. Each move requires something different, each adding something more to the battle system.
All your favorite enemies are here, along with some new ones that you’ve never seen before. Each one is colorful and fits with the Super Mario theme.
Additionally, equipping Toadstool with a parasol or Bowser with a chomp-chomp made for some of the coolest memories I have ever had with a Mario game.
Why You Should Play It
If you’re a fan of RPGs or Mario, you can’t afford to pass this game up. It has everything you could ever want in both genres.
Mario and Bowser, although on the same team, have amazing moments together that you’ll never forget. The story isn’t half bad and is actually better than any of the Paper Mario games.
With memorable moments and enough secrets and cameos to make you smile for weeks, this is one of the best Mario games ever made.
