I developed an appreciation for tea fairly early on in my life.
As someone who was always to be found either in front of the computer or curled up with a book in some corner, tea became an essential accessory. That passion only deepened when I spent three years as a barista, and more recently when I–for the most part–swapped bagged tea for loose leaf.
I am always learning, always trying new blends, and I hope to share that adventure with all of you. Each Tuesday I’ll be sampling two different teas and writing about them here. I’m always on the hunt for suggestions, so feel free to drop me a line if there is something particular you would like to see me review.
Up this week, two blends from Adagio Teas designed by artist Cara McGee. These come from her Hero Recovery sampler set. The full set features six Avengers-themed blends, and I’ll be tasting and reviewing the remaining four in the coming weeks.
Blended with: gunpowder, assam melody, black tea, ginger root, cinnamon bark, dried coconut, lemon grass, cardamom, natural coconut flavor
Teas: thai chai, assam melody, gunpowder
Steep: at 205° for 4 minutes
Caffeine level: high
The scent of this straight from the tin is intoxicating–a mix of the lemon grass and coconut notes. Once steeped, the coconut comes through giving it a milky smoothness. The gunpowder is subtle, adding a smoky warmth which made this blend my standout favorite in the set.
Blended with: assam melody, lapsang souchong, black tea, raspberry leaves, natural currant flavor
Teas: lapsang souchong, assam melody, currant
Steep: at 212° for 3 minutes
Caffeine level: high
The lapsang is the hero in this one, or heroine as the case may be.
An aroma of heavy smoke left me feeling like the currant would be overwhelmed but it does come through on the finish, giving this tea a fresh bite. It’s also worth noting that the rich, russet color combined with the heady smoke scent left me feeling like I was staring into a flame.
Adagio teas can be purchased in a 3oz. pouch for $10, a 5oz. tin for $19, or, in the case of their fandom teas, a full set of six sampler tins for $19.
Stop by again next week to check out two more blends from the Hero Recovery series, Stars & Stripes and Exiled.
