As you’ve noticed by now, we at The Grown-Up Geek are all about flying your geek flag in ways that fit with your daily life. Parents who can balance geekdom with raising quality tiny humans are no exception to that rule.
If you are a dad, step-dad, or father figure then stick around because today we have some fine examples of fathers expressing their inner geek.
1. Donkey Kong – Pauline Edition
Mike Mika is an epic example of parenting done right.
After witnessing his daughter’s disappointment when she learned she could not play as a female character in Donkey Kong, he creatively hacked the game allowing her to realize her dreams of being the heroine. When I was growing up, most female characters were villains or helpless NPCs. I had very few female role models in video games aside from Samus and Lara Croft, so seeing this video made me a little giddy with joy.
Rock on, gamer dad.
2. Cosplay Dad Extraordinaire
Another fine example of a father helping to bring his daughters’ dreams to life, this man deserves an award.
His daughter is rocking that tiny Michonne cosplay, and you can see from his face that he couldn’t be happier to be a part of it. I fully support parents taking their kids to conventions early and often – there is no better place to learn about how rewarding self-expression can be.
3. The Geekiest Alphabet Blocks Ever
Jonathan M. Gruberman had this parenting thing down from the very beginning. Together with his wife, he created a set of amazing alphabet blocks for his newborn son.
Each block features several images which the couple wanted to share with their child. Ada Lovelace is my personal favorite, and a fitting addition to the block set as Mr. Gruberman is a computer programmer.
